Program

Intercultural Communication Skills for Scrum teams

09:00 – 09:30 Introduction

We will introduce the trainers, the program for the day and the goals.

12:15 – 13:15 Lunch

Pretty much what you think it is.

09:30-10:15 Diversity game

In this game, participants are asked to reflect on and exchange their mutual differences and similarities, and eventually utilise them to boost creativity. In this way, several of the day’s key learning points are introduced.

13:15 – 14:15 Communication game

This simulation game gives us an opportunity to address some of the challenges of international communication and cooperation in an entertaining way.

10:30 – 11:30 (Cultural) Differences

We discuss, explore and analyse (cultural) differences between people, and how they impact people’s behaviour in work situations. We will touch upon different approaches to e.g. hierarchy, planning, communication, relationships, trust, work/private and rules.

We will use constellations using a number of statements. Some of them are based on the Scrum values (commitment, courage, focus, openness and respect).

14:15 – 16:00 The TOPOI model

We introduce the TOPOI model as a method to analyse miscommunication and make interventions to repair or improve it. After a short break we apply this model to a number of real life cases from existing Scrum teams.

11:30 – 12:15 Similarities: inclusiveness

We focus on the other side of the coin: recognizing similarities and commonalities between people. This is an important basis for building and enhancing team inclusiveness: a situation where all members can contribute to team goals, based on their individual talent and competence. We discuss both barriers to such inclusiveness as well as ways to enhance it.

16:00 – 17:00 Wrap-up, evaluation, and suggestions for future learning.
